All of us at Ellwood City Memories feel that we can not show enough appreciation to all of the men and women that served our country in the armed forces. With all of our heart, we thank you.
A number of years ago Keith H. Hazen exhaustively put together a book listing those of Ellwood City and the surrounding area who served in the United States Military to defend our country and provide the freedoms we enjoy today. The large book is entitled "Those Who Served" and is a tribute to all who served. We are only listing the names mentioned in the book here as the details Mr. Hazen provided would fill our allocated space on the internet.
As much work Mr. Hazen put into this great tribute, there are still men and women that may have been missed or those that have enlisted since the book was published. If someone from our area is unlisted below, please let us know so we can add their name. We would also like to add it to the list Mr. Hazen created so please include; name, date of birth, place of birth, parents name, mothers maiden name, wife or husband's name, Wife's maiden name, branch, rank he or she achieved, conflict veteran served, where, the dates of service, what outfit or ship, awards earned, and any other pertinent info concerning military service.

Re: Veterans of Ellwood City
It appears that Mr. Hazen’s research could be augmented by the following:
The Mackey family of Hazel Avenue, North Side, is represented by four brothers:
Mackey, John P. LCPL USMC 1954-1958
Mackey, William C. TSgt USAF 1958-1979
Mackey, Frank D. A1C USAF 1961-1965
Mackey, R. Scott Sgt USAF 1966-1970
Additional information available upon request.
Also missing from the list are the names of three (3) of the six (6) local soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice:
Listorti, Joseph A. LCPL USMC 1964-1967 KIA, Viet Nam
Szabo, Leslie H., Jr. Sgt USA 1967-1970 KIA, Cambodia
Smith, David F. PFC USA 1966-1969 KIA, Viet Nam
Thank you,
R. Scott Mackey
I ran into Sammy Teolis a few years back and he told me the Ledger in 1976 had done a story on the six names of Ellwood City boys who died in the Viet Nam War. Their names are on a headstone in front of the church in Pgh. Circle.
Suggestion is to get Sammy to pull together remaining veterans, of any war, still living in Ellwood to capture their stories. Ken Brown at 428 Hazel Avenue was a Radio Operator/Gunner on a B26 that flew missions during the D-Day invasion. Mike DiLoya lives a few doors down from Ken and was with the Navy at Guadalcanal. They were my neighbors growing up in the 50′s before my family moved to New Castle. Both men made a lasting impression on me as a kid growing up on the North Side.
Last fixed memory in my mind on Viet Nam and Ellwood City is having been in Ellwood for a few beers with friends before I went to Army boot camp at Ft. Dix in December 1968. I was visiting with old friends Mike Miata and Kenny Brown Jr. and ran into Richard Palumbo who had lived “up the street” from us on North Street hill. Best sled-riding hill in town.
I remember Richard was just back from Viet Nam and served in the Delta. I knew from the nightly news that was a bad place, but Richard didn’t go into great detail. Many years later in 1995 I was working with Coca-Cola in Viet Nam and took my family on a riverboat visit to a fruit plantation in the Mekong Delta, south of what used to be Saigon. Narrow waterways and banana plant leaves ruled the way.
So guys like Richard Palumbo, if they are still around the City, could give a good accounting of the Viet Nam experience. Sammy Teolis in my mind is a great organizer and could pull the generations together to craft a story.
As for me, I’ll close with my memory of the memorial on Lawrence Avenue in front of what was, in 1959, the Mayor’s office. Look how many names are on that bronze plaque. Ellwood City, to me, is all small-town America stands for in service to Country.
Enjoyed your web-site and pictures very much. Best Wishes to my favorite city.
