Pazz’s Coffee Shop
Mr. Ernie Young recently sent me a couple of pictures from Pazz’s Coffee Shop on Lawrence Avenue. The shop was located next to the State Store (now known as Wine and Spirits) during the 1960’s. It was owned by Mr. Young’s mother, Virginia Young and his aunt Kay Paswell from 1960 to 1969. The owners are pictured above behind the counter on the left is Kay and on the right is Virginia. Ernie’s father, Ernest Young Sr. is pictured serving customers in the second photograph as well. This picture gives us a good look at the prices on the menu as well.
Steak sandwich – 40¢
Hamburger 20¢
Milkshake 25¢
Shrimp with French fries and a coffee 99¢
A mushroom steak or pepper steak sub 45¢
Don’t forget – Drink Hires root beer.

Ironically, Audrey Borison & I were just talking about this coffee shop yesterday @ the election polls here in Pa. for the primaries! Her & I both were employed @ the EC Ledger, but at different times.
Sandy (Nash) Fogel & I used to meet here frequently for lunch. At that time, Dick was in the service & I was planning my marriage.
I remember Virginia well, she was a very sweet person.
Thanks for sharing,
Patty
Patty–I do remember lots of the Ledger people having lunch there. Thank you for the kind words about my Mom.
I don’t know if you remember this, but they closed each day around 6:30pm. On Fri, and Sat. nights though, my Mom and Dad would reopen and stay open till 6am or later if there was customers. They would have people from the different clubs come in after a night of fun and dancing. They along with Pe’ Wee’s fed a lot of Ellwoodian’s during those nights.
Speaking of Ellwoodian’s. Maybe I missed it, but has the Ellwoodian been mentioned on our travels down memory lane? The biggest hamburgers were served there.
Does anyone remember a women’s store called Silverblatt’s? I found an old bag with that name on it. I don’t remember it.
I remember hearing the name Silverblatt’s but I can’t remember where it was.
Patty, the fogels use to live on 4th st 411 maybe. they were our neighbors when i was little then they moved to 6th st
Sharon–I ask some older folks about Silverblatt’s and found out it was located on the south side of Law. Ave. near Doud’s. If you remember where Doud’s was. Doud’s, I do remember.
Does anyone have a memory of a children clothing store near Pe’Wee’s. Lou, I think, was the first name of the owner.
How about that sound of the steel wheel rolling down the street on Sunday Mornings delivering the Sun-Telegraph and other newspapers papers of the day.
I remember a women’s store between Pee’Wee’s and Albert’s Drug Store. But I can’t think of the name of it. I remember buying some clothes there. Maybe the clothing store was a childrens store first or they sold children & womens clothes. Montgomery Wards was somewhere between 4th & 5th streets. Wasn’t Albert’s another drug store? I think it started with a “W”. Not sure which came first. Any help?
Ernie,
Daily and Sunday paper routes were a Mackey family tradition from the late 40′s through the mid-60′s. Fortunately for the carriers and sleeping customers, carts with the wooden spoked wheels with metallic rims were converted to metal wheels with rubber tires on an attrition basis beginning in the late 50′s. Not only were they much quieter on the roads, but also easier to pull out of deep snow. Back in the day, as it were, we delivered the Pittsburgh Press and the Youngstown Vindicator, famous for its sepia-tinted photography.
Regards,
R. Scott Mackey
I think Montgomery Wards was about in the middle of the block between 4th and 5th St, a couple stores down toward 4th from Pe Wee’s.
If my memory serves me correctly (which I probably could go to the historical society & find out 4 sure), Kwall’s was a children’s store in the 400 block, between Calve’s shoe repair & “Monkey Wards”. Also Edelman’s Shoes was in that group of stores. Albert Drugs was on the corner & another drug store next to Municipal bldg. was Wilkoskys. Miss all those businesses now….!!!
Mazer’s was a children’s store on Lawrence Avenue in the early 1960′s.
The talk of all these memories that everyone shares makes me home sick for days gone by.
My Father had a drivers license but didn’t buy a car till around 1954. Didn’t need one. Living where we did all we had to do was walk 3 blocks to Law. Ave. and everything and anything we needed was there. Today, not so much, as they say.
Linda, I believe it was you who mentioned a photo studio along 4th St. down from Dr. Obey’s Office. It has been driving me crazy trying to remember the name. I took trumpet lessons from him. I even looked in some of my old music books, which I still have, hoping to find his name, with no luck. For some reason Lanza keeps coming to my mind, but I don’t think that’s it. Mr. Lanza was a football coach for the Jr. High with Mr. Wallace before he moved to Calif., I believe. Jim Hardy may know where for sure.
Ernie, Coach Lanzi’s name was Nick and he was also my sixth grade teacher at North Side. I’m not sure but think that he was the son of Nick Lanzi who had the market around Pershing. He was a good coach and an excellent teacher. I only know that Mr. Wallace retired not long after your freshman team went undefeated. He had hoped we would do it for him but we fell short by a few points. Hard to believe we lost two games and only had 13 points scored against us the whole season.
I remember 3 photography studios in Ellwood back when,
McGlincy, Fera, & Shidemantle’s. Yes, I do remember Mazur’s. Does anyone remember Manz’s Gift shop. I received a few shower & wedding gifts from there. Was it Lordi’s that a music shop & taught lessons. The grocery store at the corner of Pershing & Mt Vernon Dr. was owned by Nick & Rose Lanza. If anyone has corrections, please do not hesitate. Thank you for sharing! (now where did I lay my car keys)?????can’t remember, dododo!!!
I think Lordi’s Music Store was on 5th Street. Was Manz’s Gift Shop owned by Helen Manz (Rizzo’s wife) who also owned Helen’s Dress Shop?
Hi Joanne,
Yes, Lordi’s was on 5th St (b/4) subway overpass. The Manzs were a german couple, his name was Tony, not sure his wife’s name. You have remarkable memories of Ellwood, R U related to the owner’s Miller Dry Goods & also lived on Glen Ave? Helen Manz worked for Schweiger’s Dress Shop & then bought them out & named it Helen’s. She still is involved with clothing, I believe she gave up the bridal end and now handling tuxs. (probably don’t want to deal with bridezillas!!!!)heehee
Hi Patty,
I remember Rizzo Manz from the county club (my parents were avid golfers). My parents owned Miller’s Gift Shop at 622 Lawrence Ave., next door to Miller’s Dry Goods. It’s really good to read postings from native Ellwoodians who share many of my memories our our hometown.
Patty and Ray– I’m so happy to see your names here. I could write an ellwood city memories page about being at your house when I was a kid. I was sharing this site with my brother ray last night and we were smiling at seeing you on here. Nice memories and great people.
Thanks Jeff, great hearing from U! Also thanks for the kind words. Yes, “those were those days my friend, I wish they would never end”, (oh silly me, breaking into song)!!
We did have a blast, I have the movies to prove it. Remember Chris moonwalking??? Chris & Ryan sang @ my niece’s wedding???? Ray & you were too cute! Funny antics!
God’s blessings, love U guys!
