Tombstones on Beaver Avenue

1289 320x240 city paint glass Tombstones on Beaver Avenue     I was recently shown a newspaper article from the Ellwood City Ledger that was dated March 7, 1975.

Along with the picture above on Beaver Avenue there sat eight tombstones along the street behind the City Paint and Glass Store a good number of years. The tombstones had names already engraved including husband and wife’s first names and even dates. The article stated that the tombstones had been there since 1963 when City Paint and Glass moved into the 728 Lawrence Avenue location according to CP&G employee Chuck Anderson.

The former tenant of the building was a memorial company which Anderson believed went out of business. The tombstones were in the building when City Paint moved there so a couple of the guys took the tombstones out of the building and the property along Beaver Avenue was simply a “convenient place to put them”.

As the tombstones were already inscribed I have to hope that they were samples and not ones that had been ordered but never delivered.
