Bob,

I believe Sean moved there just before varsity as his dad was the coach for Blackhawk. I remember seeing him on "That's Incredible" in the early 80's. He had some strong ball handling skills. Dan and Sean together would have done some amazing things in EC in my opinion. Sean coached Xavier and I believe he now coaches Arizona. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

David Allen was a good player in the mid 90's. He ended up playing for Geneva College (I think he was a freshman at Geneva when I was a Sr. at Geneva). I do not know any of the stats he posted for Ellwood City and I am not sure of his success at Geneva.

Gosth I remember this. The first team I was on was the Medusa Cobras. I can't remember after that. I also remember that during the season, they would have a Super Soccer Saturday where there would be a big tournament. Robert DiBuono, Shawn Conway, Jack and Andre DiAddio were some of the notable players during my time. Good times.

Joe’s father, Steve Rubino, was not born in Biano, Italy in 1877 (that was his Grandfather, Joseph E. Rubino) He was born in Ellwood City in 1908, and became one of Ellwood City’s most powerful political figures. Mr. Rubino served five consecutive terms as councilman and was eventually nominated for Mayor of Ellwood City.

I remember working the tobacco fields back in 1960/61. Came down with a severe case of "tobacco rash" after working in the fields. Made many friends that I still stay in touch with.

I grew up 2 doors down from Mena and Penny on Pittsburgh Circle and knew them both very well. My dad, who always pushed my brothers and I to be gentlemen, would have one of us take her groceries in, shovel her snow, be neighborly, etc. Not only was she great to talk to, but would always drop off some hot dogs to a few hungry boys as a thank you.

She had some crazy gilded decorations in that house too-- and come to think of it had a huge raised sidewalk in front of her house that made a pretty good bike jump-- probably not as impressive as my 7 year old memory of it:)

My memory of Pe Wee's is back to when I was just ten years old. Mena Gelles the owner of the shop
was my sponsor in the Soap Box Derby. I raced for her for three years in the derby. The first year on Line Ave and then over to Lawrence Ave. for two years.
The big bonus for racing for Pe Wee's was Mena would give me two dozen Chilli Dogs after each event. I was
all the guys friend after the race.
And then the big thing when you got older was going out having a good time and ending up their about 2:00a/m . You could not find a seat at that time and the lines were long, but worth the wait.
Again there are probably four establishments everyone has a memory of who grew up in Ellwood City, Pe Wee's, Johhny's Pizza, Nick's Snack Bar, and J&T Custard up on the hill. Also one Rock Idol, Donnie Iris who had the hit The Rapper with the Jaggerz as well as with Donnie and the Donnels and the Cruisers presently which I am listening to the CD Ellwood City as I am typing this, that I got in the mail about ten minutes ago.
Although you may grow up and leave, your memories are forever. God Bless Ellwood City!!

The St. Agatha Bazaar - remember it well. Walking around thinking we were big stuff. I remember the game where you rolled the golf ball and bet on which number it would land on. One year, some old guy was running it and kept shouting, "Come on and play Happy Pappy". There was a house pot (HP) slot that the ball could land on resulting in the house winning the pot. The old guy made it really fun to play that year.

I also remember the year my little sister rode the rotating cage ride where you would spin your individual cage while it turned. After the 4th time, she threw up during the ride. I took her to the bathroom to clean up. Right after, she grabbed a "lemon shake", took a couple sips and was ready to hit that ride again. LOL

I remember the blizzard of 93'. I just got back from a friends house in Pittsburgh and the snow started shortly after I go home. I remember my brother and I venturing out to walk to Prime Time video to rent some video games. We were the only people outside, the snow on the bridge walkways was up to our hips. We still laugh about it.

That building across from the house probably was a store that provided feed for horses in those days. Later it became a hot dog shop -- kind of an upscale Pe'Wee Lunch -- run by Theodore and Emma Tolla, who lived at 514 First Avenue. I don't know if that building was torn down.
The paved road coming in from the left side with the ornamental railing was the Fifth Street bridge (which was torn down about 12 years ago. You know it was that because it had a paved road and it led over the creek. Nothing else was paved so this was in the Thirties. They put the sidewalk in for Wampum Avenue in the Thirties, and before that there was a wooden walkway. I don't know when they paved the street but I think the increasing traffic because of the bridge would have made it necessary. Tricks had to navigate up and down the hill so it would have been a nightmare if it weren't paved.
Remember that the route leading from New Castle, down North Street hill and onto the bridge and so on was a state road, not an Ellwood responsibility. It was route 19 going to Pittsburgh.

Do you remember the little shack at the railroad crossing on 4th Street where a crossing guard was on duty 24 / 7 and would hold a lantern and a sigh that said stop.
Are there any photos of that?

I remember Pe'Wees very well. Still haven't found a place in all of Los Angeles that can match their chili hot dogs. I remember going in there late at night or just getting them for dinner. The aroma was always great with the steam and how they wrapped the dogs. I took my daugher and granddaugher there in 1999 and my granddaugher asked what "pop" was. Here they say soda. I have the EC village piece of Pe'Wees. Mena(the owener in the 50's) was always so nice. I think her daugher's name was Penny. Good memories
