Men’s Fast Pitch Softball League
During the 1950′s the team to beat every year in the Men’s fast-pitch softball league were the perennial Champions, New Deal Bar. One of the bars championship team were, front row, from left to right, Honey Tammaro, Frank Ritorto, Mauro Vitullo, Sam Rubino, Bob Snare, and Dale Brown. Middle row left to right, Tony Scialdone, Sparky Sirimarco, Ralph Fotia, Bud Foley, Chinko Elias and Bob Tammaro. Back row included, from the left, Jack Snare (sponsor), Gene Tillia, Bud Campbell, and James Foley.
I remember seeing these guys play a few games. I can not remember who pitched for them, as this is by far the most important position in fast pitch. They were somewhat older than me but I knew Bob Snare and Dale Brown. I remember Dale better for being one of top baseball pitchers in the area. When I first moved to Florida in the mid 70′s, I lived in Clearwater part of the year and saw several of the Clearwater Bombers games. They won several national fast pitch tournaments and imported their pitchers, the best they could find in the U.S. A lot of the games were 1-0, as most of the hitters had a hard time getting a bat on the pitches. These guys above did a lot of hitting as I remember.
With two of my seven brother’s on this particular team, and helping as a part time bat boy, I remember this team well. The two main players who pitched were Gene Tillia & Bud Foley. Every player on the team were exceptionally talented athlete’s. What a pleasure seeing this photo after all these years. Thank You
