Veterans of Ellwood City
All of us at Ellwood City Memories feel that we can not show enough appreciation to all of the men and women that served our country in the armed forces. With all of our heart, we thank you.
A number of years ago Keith H. Hazen exhaustively put together a book listing those of Ellwood City and the surrounding area who served in the United States Military to defend our country and provide the freedoms we enjoy today. The large book is entitled “Those Who Served” and is a tribute to all who served. We are only listing the names mentioned in the book here as the details Mr. Hazen provided would fill our allocated space on the internet.
As much work Mr. Hazen put into this great tribute, there are still men and women that may have been missed or those that have enlisted since the book was published. If someone from our area is unlisted below, please let us know so we can add their name. We would also like to add it to the list Mr. Hazen created so please include; name, date of birth, place of birth, parents name, mothers maiden name, wife or husband’s name, Wife’s maiden name, branch, rank he or she achieved, conflict veteran served, where, the dates of service, what outfit or ship, awards earned, and any other pertinent info concerning military service.

Re: Veterans of Ellwood City
It appears that Mr. Hazen’s research could be augmented by the following:
The Mackey family of Hazel Avenue, North Side, is represented by four brothers:
Mackey, John P. LCPL USMC 1954-1958
Mackey, William C. TSgt USAF 1958-1979
Mackey, Frank D. A1C USAF 1961-1965
Mackey, R. Scott Sgt USAF 1966-1970
Additional information available upon request.
Also missing from the list are the names of three (3) of the six (6) local soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice:
Listorti, Joseph A. LCPL USMC 1964-1967 KIA, Viet Nam
Szabo, Leslie H., Jr. Sgt USA 1967-1970 KIA, Cambodia
Smith, David F. PFC USA 1966-1969 KIA, Viet Nam
Thank you,
R. Scott Mackey
I ran into Sammy Teolis a few years back and he told me the Ledger in 1976 had done a story on the six names of Ellwood City boys who died in the Viet Nam War. Their names are on a headstone in front of the church in Pgh. Circle.
Suggestion is to get Sammy to pull together remaining veterans, of any war, still living in Ellwood to capture their stories. Ken Brown at 428 Hazel Avenue was a Radio Operator/Gunner on a B26 that flew missions during the D-Day invasion. Mike DiLoya lives a few doors down from Ken and was with the Navy at Guadalcanal. They were my neighbors growing up in the 50′s before my family moved to New Castle. Both men made a lasting impression on me as a kid growing up on the North Side.
Last fixed memory in my mind on Viet Nam and Ellwood City is having been in Ellwood for a few beers with friends before I went to Army boot camp at Ft. Dix in December 1968. I was visiting with old friends Mike Miata and Kenny Brown Jr. and ran into Richard Palumbo who had lived “up the street” from us on North Street hill. Best sled-riding hill in town.
I remember Richard was just back from Viet Nam and served in the Delta. I knew from the nightly news that was a bad place, but Richard didn’t go into great detail. Many years later in 1995 I was working with Coca-Cola in Viet Nam and took my family on a riverboat visit to a fruit plantation in the Mekong Delta, south of what used to be Saigon. Narrow waterways and banana plant leaves ruled the way.
So guys like Richard Palumbo, if they are still around the City, could give a good accounting of the Viet Nam experience. Sammy Teolis in my mind is a great organizer and could pull the generations together to craft a story.
As for me, I’ll close with my memory of the memorial on Lawrence Avenue in front of what was, in 1959, the Mayor’s office. Look how many names are on that bronze plaque. Ellwood City, to me, is all small-town America stands for in service to Country.
Enjoyed your web-site and pictures very much. Best Wishes to my favorite city.
Dave Larson, 24 Dec 2009
I wonder of Alvin C. Wehman is my grandfather: Alvi Charles Wehman, served in WWII and was known as “Chuck”. Grandpap worked at the tube mill and lived on Van Gorder Mill Road. I’m guessing that “Alvin” is supposed to be Alvi.
My father Russell M. Thompson served in WWII.
His name is on the plaque in front of the Municipal Building.
My Uncle Glen Thompson also served in WWII.
Three brothers_Glen, Russ and Ken (already listed)
Marine Sgt. James Mundo was my great uncle killed during the Battle of Saipan.
During high school and somewhat in college, I had the privilege of serving as Ellwood City’s VFW bugler for military funerals and services. The veterans always amazed and somewhat intimidated me. Here I was, in my teens and in the presence of men who showed more courage and honor than anyone I can think of. The stories I heard then stick with me today.
I just want to say to all that have and continue to serve, with all of my heart, Thank You. Thank you for the sacrifice and the courage.
Also, My Uncles R. Gerald “Chip” Thompson and Lale “Lefty” Thompson
served during the Korean War/Conflict.
Five brothers, including Glen, Russ and Ken, sons of Ralph Thompson and Helen Byers Thompson, all attended Lincoln HS, .
Glen-Born 1920?- WWII
Russ-Born 1922-WWII- trained as a medic, was sent to Paris Jan 1944.
Ken-Born 1925?-WWII- was wounded Christmas Eve 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge.
Chip-Born 1928?-Korean War- was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.
Lale-Born 1930?-Korean War
Thanks, Jer
My great grandfather and his brother both served our country~
John William Sullivan WWI and WWII
Micheal Edward Sullivan WWI
Their parents were Phillip and Angeline Salomon and they lived at 436 Hazel Ellwood City.
Both myself and my father served.
Jessica (Tallon) Davis, SSgt, USAF, served 2001 – present, OEF, OIF. Attended Riverside High School
Randy Tallon, MSgt, USAF (Ret) served 1973-2005. Attended Beaver Falls High School
This took me way back in time to the 50′s and 60′s. I grew up in New Castle but my mother, Pauline Santillo, was from Ellwood City. I loved visiting with my uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents in Ellwood. I spent a lot of time with them growing up. My family came from Italy and lived on Franklin Avenue, between the Deleasio’s (I know its spelled wrong) and the Cistolo’s, two great families.
My family also served our country. My uncle John Santillo served in the US Army during WWII and invaded Spain. My uncle Emmett served in the US Army and served as a medic in the Korean War. Ronnie Johnston who married my cousin Marie Trivilino served in the USMC and was wounded in Vietnam. My father Nick Alfreda (Silver Star, Purple Hearts, & Bronze Stars) is a US Army WW2 POW and escaped and served in three invasions – North Africa, Sicily, Normandy. My brother Tom is a USMC veteran. My uncle Guy Santillo is a US Army veteran. My uncle Patsy Trivilino is an US Army veteran. I am a US Army vet and served in Delta region of Vietnam. Joe Alfreda
I know my Dad, Gene Turner served in WWII in Saipan(?). He wa a radio man, but mainly performed as a barber. He cut our servicemen’s hair, but also had to cut the prisoner’s hair. He told me he became somewhat friends with one of the prisoners and that prisoner carved an doll and dressed it in Asian material for me. I still have that doll along with my Dad’s discharge papers and many other papers plus lots of photos of my dad’s Navy friends.
Five Turner boys served in the military:
Eugene E. Turner – b.8/24/18 d. 9/2000 Navy WWII
Kenneth C. Turner – Marine Corps (Turner’s Funeral Home) WWII
Albert Turner – Army WWII
Charles Turner – Air Force WWII
Leonard Turner – Army Korean War
Joseph Turner was ill and was denied.
All the men were at war and some of their wives lived with my grandparents(Charles & Edna Turner) at Fourth St. & Bell Ave. The big brick house on the corner. Sorry I don’t know all of the dates for all my uncles.
Linda Turner Tidemanson
I can give you the names of several members of my family who saw action in WWII. I was just a little girl and do not have a lot of “info” on rank or where they fought, but I will make a effort to track down more details.
My cousin, Bob Welton was in the Marines. He lived with his mother Abbie and father Wilber, two houses away from me on Orchard Ave.
After leaving the service, Bob got his law degree from Duke University and went on to become a FBI agent. My brother is his name-sake.
Two other cousins also served in either the army or marines.
Paul Houk and his brother Clayton. Their parents were Clyde B. Houk and his wife Verna. My uncle Clyde was once Burgess of Ellwood City and our state representative in Harrisburg.
My favorite story is of my next door neighbor on Orchard Ave….
Tom Murphy (parents Frank & Edith) bailed out over Normandy on D-Day, and broke his back upon landing. He was captured, and spent some time in a prisoner-of-war camp, but received good care from a compassionate German doctor. After his back healed he managed to escape and make his way out of Germany and across France with the help of the underground…..eventually reaching safety in England. I remember the horror and grief the day the telegram arrived with the news that he was missing in action….the hope when we found out he was alive….and the joy and rejoicing when we heard he was safe and on his way home!!!!
Tom later moved to California where he and his wife began a foundation similar to the one for exchange students…only they arranged for teachers from America to go to Germany and for German educators to come here, in an attempt to help heal the wounds and scars of war. Tom never forgot the the doctor who cared for him, and the German people who aided in his escape, and this was his way of saying “Thank You”.
My late father, Fred Richardson, served during WWII. I do not know his rank for sure but he was from Shenandoah, Iowa. He was married to my mother, Dorothy Herge, until her death in 1977. He was born May 16, 1924. I believe he served in Australia. Also, my brother, Tom Richardson, married to Janice Everman in 1971, who he met while serving in the Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB. His birthday is January 4, 1948. He was a sgt and served 1966-1970, I believe. I would like to see both of them listed on your veterans board.
Our parents were married on February 21, 1947.
Albert Wilson of 410 Haig St Ellwood City served in WW I
Albert moved to Ellwood City from Butler Butler Co Pennsylvania in 1917 when he began working as a crane operator in the cold draw of the Ellwood Works of the U.S. Steel Corp. He retired in Feburary 1957 after 40 years of service.
Albert was a charter member of the Ellwood City VFW and a veteran of World War I. He served with Company
C, 65th Transportation Corps in France.
Could you please list him on your Veterans board.
Thank you
My Father William R. Stevenson served with the 278th Field Artillery in the European Theatre during WW II. He attained the rank of 1st Sargeant.

Other pertinent information: Have been in touch with Rose Mary Sabo Brown who was married to Leslie Sabo when he was killed in action in Cambodia on 10 May 1970. Coincidentally, I arrived home to Bellvue PA (where my parents had moved to from Ellwood City) on 9 May 1970. My first day in civilian clothes was the day Leslie died. I was serving in Chu Lai at the time Leslie and the 101st Airborne Division went into the Parrot’s Beak in Cambodia. When I returned to the States I was posted to the AG Orders Section at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, home of the 101st Airborne. In September of 1997, after Hun Sen’s coup in Phnom Penh, I went into Cambodia as the General Manager of Cambodia Beverage Company, the Coca-Cola bottling franchise owned by F&NCC in Singapore. Small world. I am fortunate to have served and am indebted to guys like Leslie Sabo who did not make it home. May we always remember those who gave their lives for this great country and Ellwood City.
My father, Ronald L. Shoaf served in the U.S.Army during the Korean War but was one of the fortunate ones to be stationed in Germany. He was a corporal at the time of his discharge. He resided on Brown Road (Cherry Hill) at the time of his death 12-21-1995. His brother, Curtis E. “Grub” Shoaf served in the Marine Corps. He also lived on Brown Road at the time of his death in 2010. I’ll have to check on the dates of service. There are 3 more brothers that I have to find out about. I will update when I have more info.
I don’t see my Dad or uncle on the list. May Dad is harry Alvin Kocher and served during Korean War in the Navy in Flight Squadron VF-12. My uncle, Robert Kocher served in the Airborne during WWII and made jumps in Africa, Italy and D-Day. How do I get them added to the list?
Their Father was Cecil Kocher.
Hello,
I was just looking for my dad under Ellwood City Veterans and didn’t see him there… William Stamm Brenneman born 1/25/1918in Ellwood City – his sister is still living near Ellwood City and is 94…. He was in the Army Air corp during WWII.
Anyway, he is having his 93rd birthday on Januray 25th… If you would like to send him a greeting – please send it to diane82346@yahoo.com and I will see that he gets it… Thankyou, his daughter, Laura – in Colorado

Here are more men missing from your list.
The first one is Ralph (Red)K Wigton. Sgt.in WWII in the European Theatre. Served in l944 on into the occupation of
Germany. Received 2 medals. One for Good Conduct and the other for sharp shooter. He was my father.
My Mother’s 3 brothers are also missing from your list.
Dan Popa Navy Pacific Theatre
Nick Popa Navy Pacific Theatre
George Popa Pilot
I hope I’m not too late for these entries to be added. having just heard about this today. I have been an avid WWII buff all of my life. I’m a Charter Member of the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. When I see a vet, I’ll go up to them and thank them and to see where they served. I mention I was born during the Battle of the Bulge and of course they won but I’m still battling mine.

Is there not a complete list of Veteran’s names somewhere in Ellwood City? As a last resort, you could copy the names from the memorial in front of the Municipal building. Is that not a complete list?
If there are any newspapers of the war years available, you could get all the stories and they would be more numerous and possibly more accurate, than the views of people today; Check the ‘newspaper’s availablity.
Perhaps a interested group, or any interested Club at the high school perhaps, could be asked to help with the list copied from the Municipal’s memorials. Good Luck, Al Pishioneri

John J. Mack – Army E5
Chester Mack – Army E5
Stanley Mack – Army Air Core Lt.
John C. Dunning served as a gunner in the 15th Air Force, 483rd Bomber Group during World War II, where he earned 3 oak leaf clusters and 4 bronze stars. He flew 35 combat missions in a B-17, and owns the distinction of shooting down one of the first German jet prototype planes in 1945.
I found this site recently and have been following the posts regarding “Veterans of Ellwood City.” I agree with Albert F. Pishioneri that a credible place to find a list of veterans is on the memorial. I would not consider it a “last resort” but a logical first place to look.
On a visit several years ago I went to the memorial site. I focused on Vietnam veteran listing since I was one of many (U.S. Army) to serve there. I looked at all the names shown and belive they are accurate and complete. I can vividly recall that time in history and most of the Ellwood City people who served there.

I don’t see my name as a veteran of WWII. I don’t live in Ellwoood City now.
Please add the following family member to your Veteran Listing:
Robert D. Chesko Marine Korean War
Moses Guy War of 1812
Henry S. Guy Civil War
Moses Lorenzo Guy Civil War
Please add Harvey R. Guy Marine to your list of those that served in the military. Five years at Okinawa.
My Great X4 grandfather, Moses Guy was born in the Eastern mountains of Pennsylvania in 1788. Around 1800 he was farming with his family in Wayne Twp. He served in the War of 1812-1814. He was in the Battle of Black Rock. Black Rock is a village outside of Buffalo. One of the many accomplishments of this war in the North was the acquisition of Lake Erie. This war ranged from Canada to New Orleans.
His military records state he was in the Army and the Navy. Possibly an error. If not, what a story we have lost!
No more is known of his service. His gravestone is located in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
Henry Standoff Guy, was the son of Moses Guy. The following is from History of New Castle and Lawrence County Pennsylvania 1908:
Henry S. Guy, a representative citizen of Wayne Township, and an honored survivor of the great Civil War, was born near Harlansburg, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, March 28, 1833. His parents were Moses and Elizabeth (Standoff)Guy.
Henry S. Guy has resided in Wayne Township almost all of his life and his recollections of boyhood and youth in reference to this now fertile, well-cultivated and populous section of Lawrence County are very interesting. He obtained his edcation in one of the log school houses which were the best the township then afforded. In his youth game was plentiful and he learned to be expert with his rifle even before entering the army. He has always been more or less interesteed in farming, but for fourteen years prior to enlisting, he was engineer and foreman for the Portland Cement Works near Wampum. In 1861 he enlisted at Wurtemburg in Company C, One Hundredth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a regiment known as the “Roundheads”, and was mustered into the service at Pittsburgh. From that city the regiment was sent on to Washington and from there to South Carolina, and was stationed at Port Royal, where it remained from the fall of 1861 until the following May. After taking part in the engagement at James Island (the attack at Fort Sumter)the regiment was then ordered to Newport News, Virginia, and two weeks later was transferred by boat to Fredericksburg, then to Culpepper Court House, and participated in the second Battle of Bull Run, August 22, 1862. It was at this battle that Mr. Guy was wounded by a spent ball which disabled him, the injury to his thumb and hand causing his remaining in a hospital for seven months, and after his discharge on a surgeon’s certificate, on account of disability, he returned to Lawrence County. The seriousness of Mr. Guy’s injury was recognized by the government and at first he was given a pension of $8, which has been increased to $40 per month. He resumed farming as soon as he was able to do so, although for a year afterward he was obliged to work with one hand on the plow, his other hand being carried in a sling. He is a valued member of Wampum Post, No. 381, Grand Army of the Republic, at Wampum.
A side note: The “Roundheads” was a nickname given to farmers who supported England’s Parliament, when the King wanted absolute power, and eliminated Parliament. This was England’s Civil War from 1640 – 1689. The story of Cromwell,is the best source to learn of this group of very ordinary men fighting to be heard.
Another member of our family is Moses Lorenzo Guy. He also served in the Civil War. He was the son of Joseph Kirk Guy, and grandson of Moses Guy of the War of 1812. He served as a Private in the Volunteer I Company A 1st PHB Cavalry Regiment 1st Regulars of Ferree’s PA Militia.
The gravestone at Slippery Rock Cemetery reads Moses Loren Guy.
Ferree was from a long line of gunsmiths in France, then moved to Lancaster County continuing to make “remarkable” guns. More info can be found at www. ferreereunion.com.
I haven’t found any info about his service. I’ve not given up!
My uncle, Harvey Guy has been living on the family property all his life on Line Avenue.
Slippery Rock Cemetery is the resting place for five of my grandfather’s. How fortunate for me to show my grandchildren this beautiful place and give them a sense of those who lived before them. Each one had a remarkable sense of duty to his family, the need for education for all children, and dedication to his church.
Please add these men to the Veterans list
Robert O. Brown
Kenneth J. Brown Sr.
Dale A. Brown Sr.
Kenneth J, Brown Jr.
Dale A, Brown Jr.
Thank you!
my son, braden e. vinroe, served in desert storm with 101 airborne/air assault , ft campbell, ky.
Our dad, Thomas Arthur (Art) Millson, served in the Navy during WWII.
He was born in Ellwood City, but he’s buried outside Atmore, Alabama.
My three cousins were in WW II. Howard Blank, Ken Blank, and Bill Blank. Bill is still alive and still active in the Blank Supply Company. You can contact him there for more info.
I found your site by accident, but when I was looked on the veterans page, I was dismayed to see my father not listed. Larry C. Coblentz, now deceased, resided in Ellwood City for the majority of his life. His lived at 1905 Brighton Road, then later moved to 195 Hutter Avenue. Dad joined the military in 1945 and served until 1947. He was stationed in Guam. I don’t know a lot because he wouldn’t ever talk about it. When he got out of the service he was a Corporal. Please add him to your list.
I am also interested in getting in touch with Mr. Barnes who submitted the photos of my grandparents, Jessie and Bill, on Uncle Harvey’s porch. If possible, I’d like to get a copy of that photo.
Thank you,
Mary Lou
Forgotten from the veterans from Ellwood are:
John P. Abbaticchio (Korean War) Infantry
Martin R. Abbaticchio (Korean War) Army
Robert C. Abbaticchio (Air Force)
They were all graduates from Lincoln High – John in 1945;
Martin in 1947 and Robert in 1949.
My father Robert A. Clark spent his time in China during WWII as a Marine. I am also a Marine and spent 1967 & 1968 i Viet Nam. We lived on Wiley Hill and I graduated from Riverside in 1966.
For those looking for a more complete list of local veterans, I suggest the courthouse in New Castle.
A few months after my discharge I received an appointment in the mail to report to “someone” in the courthouse on a specified day and time. My “boss” at work wasn’t too happy that I had to take off work to go. After reporting I found that all they wanted was an update of my service record. That was an early impression of “clerks”.
Ernest Wehman served during the Civil War with the Roundheads. He changed his spelling of his name when he tried to get a pension and they had his name spelled incorrectly. It was easier to change his name and collect than fight a long battle to prove who he was.
Ernest Wehman/Ernst Weyman/sometimes also spelled Wayman.
Born September 8, 1837
Enlisted August 31, 1861 100th PA Infantry

My great great grandfather was Charles Wehman. (Catherine…children Mary B, Harry Edward, Ella C., Emma M., Nina, Annie, Sarah “Sadie” 1900 census)
Charles was Ernest’s brother.
Charles and Ernest were sons of Frederic and Christina (Slipper) Wehman.
I really did not know my father growing up but I would like if possible to find information about his service in WWII. I do know that he was MIA on Christmas Eve at the Battle of the Bulge(?) and also something about Normandy Beachhead invasion. If anyone can tell me how to find out would be greatly appreciated. Also, I see my oldest brothers name listed but it is spelled incorrectly, unless there is another Robert T. Green who served Vietnam Era from Ellwood City.
Is it possible to correct a name on this list. My father James A. Hardie is listed as Hardy and if it could be corrected I would be grateful. He also received the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He rarely spoke of his time in Europe as did most of the Vets I have known. This memorial day weekend marks the 20th anniversary of his death and for fun I googled his name and was surprised to see he was listed on the Military Times Hall of Valor. The entire text of his Silver Star citation was printed there. I never saw the citation until my brother found it among my mothers effects after her death.
There were two other Ellwood natives listed in the Hall of Valor. A General and an Air force gunner. I don’t know how the names were chosen but I do know my father would not be too thrilled about being there. He believed that something like that should be reserved for those who gave their “last full measure of devotion”.
A Big Thank you to all who served.
Picture this: Jim Hardie and I attended 3rd grade through 7th grade together. During those years I built WWII model airplanes, watched the old war movies on T.V. and probably knew more than the average kid about World War II. I did not know until reading Jim’s comment above that his father served in WWII. I just want to reinforce Jim’s perspective that those who served back then did not look for any recognition. They came home from the war and did all they could to blend in to the normalcy of every day life. Humility was a common attribute. They were proud to have served, but let their individual contribution be overshadowed by the larger contribution made by the nation as a whole and by those families who lost loved ones.
My own father was exempt from military service due to occupational specialty as a telephone installer. He had no war stories to tell, so I use that as what peaked my interest in studying that war. I still do that to this day. The more I learn the more I know that these silent heroes can only be recognized by our admiration for what they had done for our country, many years ago, and ensuring their contribution is not lost to generations yet to come.
I am currently serving in the U.S. Navy as a CMDCM/E-9. Participated in OEF/OIF/OND.
